Documents we apostille most often for Portugal

  • Florida birth and marriage certificates for conservatória do registo civil files (certified copy first)
  • Powers of attorney (procuração) for property, vehicles, NIF matters, and legal procedures in Portugal
  • Diplomas and school records for university admission
  • Corporate documents for cartório notarial and company matters
  • Sworn statements and affidavits

The apostille is a certificate issued by the Florida Department of State in Tallahassee. Portugal accepts it directly because both countries are parties to the Hague Convention. No additional step at a Portuguese embassy or consulate.

Questions about the apostille for Portugal

Can I do everything from Portugal, without traveling?+

Yes. The notarization happens by video call and I handle the apostille in Tallahassee. You only send the document and receive it back with tracked shipping.

Does this work for selling a property in Portugal?+

Yes. Florida powers of attorney are among the most apostilled documents for Portugal. I will guide you on how to structure the document so the receiving notary or entity accepts it without objections.

My background check is from the FBI, not Florida. Does that work?+

No. Federal documents such as an FBI background check are apostilled by the US Department of State in Washington, not by Florida. Message me and I will point you to the right path.

Is a Florida apostille enough for Portuguese registries and conservatórias?+

Yes. Portugal and the United States are both parties to the 1961 Hague Convention, so the Florida Department of State apostille is accepted directly, with no consular legalization. If the document is signed rather than a vital record, the signature is notarized online under Chapter 117 of the Florida Statutes before the apostille step.
